Down South

| June 8, 2014

It has been a long time since I have seen most of my family in Texas. Actually, there are quite a few members of the family that I have never seen. Cousins have married, kids have been born, and all the kids have grown up. My mom and I decided it was about time we paid everyone a visit. I haven’t been there in over 10 years and my mom hasn’t been back to see her sister, my only Aunt, in a long time. Besides the fact that I really miss my family, I want Sam to see how much family she actually has. Mark had a ton of work to do and our shore vacation was coming up so my mom and I went with Sam. It was Sam’s first time on an airplane, but I have to say, it went better than I could have expected. Sam was so excited about the trip that she was good as gold the whole time.

You can see from her face how happy she was. The airport is not exactly the most fun place, but for Sam, it was a whole new world!

DSC01858

Off we go to the gate! I’m glad she had this experience. It will make it so much easier for her to understand when Mark goes away, now that she knows where he goes and what happens when he enters the airport.

DSC01859

Sam watched vigilantly out the window to make sure our plane showed up – and it did!

DSC01863

When it was time to board, Sam marched right down onto the plane.

DSC01864

The seats actually weren’t too bad this flight because we seemed to have a little room. Sam, of course, had a ton of room for her little legs. Sam (and Froggy) are all belted in and ready to go. She told me, “I can’t believe I’m on a real airplane!”

DSC01866

DSC01870

This is the picturesque view out her window. Sam kept saying with wonder, “I can’t believe I flew through a cloud!” That was probably a highlight of her flight. That, and the fact that the flight attendant brought her a cup of ice when she wanted it.  Oh. And the tiny little bathroom, which she thought was hysterical.

We finally arrived after a thankfully non-eventful flight. Sam couldn’t wait to see everyone. We stayed at Aunt Barbara’s house and Sam had her own little bed, right next to ours, to sleep in. She loved it, but still wound up in my bed at some point every night. Some things never change…That and the fact that she woke up at the crack of dawn. Thankfully, Richard, Barbara’s husband wakes up before dawn and Sam quickly figured out she could run into the den in the mornings and he would get her milk and put on some cartoons. Sam told me, “Richard is silly like Poppy!”

DSC01874

Barbara watches Rayleigh, my cousin Terry’s son, Bruce’s little girl when she is not in school so Sam had a playmate all week, which was great. Rayleigh is about a year younger than Sam but they became fast friends. One of the things they both had to do first thing every morning was feed the goldfish.

DSC01901

On Sunday, there was a big family get together, partially because we were there, and partially as an impromptu bridal shower for my cousin Denise’s daughter, Aubrey. My other cousin’s girls, Lana Kate and Emma were there too so Sam had a lot of fun playing.

DSC01883

The girls played croquet…

DSC01878

…and jumped on the bed. All little girls are the same, aren’t they?

DSC01892

My poor cousin Terry got to be the horse for a while for the little cowgirls.

DSC01896

It was pretty hot in Texas so we got lots of pool time. First, in a blow up pool at Barbara’s house where Sam was obsessed with her water squirter that Barbara bought all the girls.

DSC01911

Then at Bruce and Amy’s community pool. Sam was so excited to go in a real pool since we hadn’t been to ours yet. It has been too cold at home, but not in Texas! It was at least 90 every day.

I was really happy to see how quickly Sam took to her relatives since she didn’t know them before. She went right off with Sara with no hesitation.

DSC01921

We also went to visit my cousin Paul and his wife Scotty. Paul was away, but Scotty hosted everyone. Sam brought her squirter and was shooting people when she could.

DSC01965

I was in the house for a while and Sam went right into the pool with Terry. She was out there for quite a while when I came out to check on her and I was quickly told (by Sam) to go back inside! Well. Ok, then.

DSC01966

There were giant pool noodles for Sam to use. It was the first time she ever did something like that. I wish these pictures could convey what was actually happening. It was amazing to me. Sam was floating around in the pool, for hours, holding onto the noodle, kicking her feet, and swimming across the pool. The pool was about 5 feet deep and Sam had no fear. She propelled herself across the length of the pool so many times. She was so incredibly proud of herself and I was proud of her too. It is definitely time for swim lessons. That girl is a little fish!

DSC01983

Paul and Scotty live out in the country and they have horses and cows. They also have a barn cat! Everyone made friends with the kitty pretty quickly since it was so friendly!

IMGP1760

DSC01962

Sam loved seeing the horses, but no matter what we did, she wouldn’t ride one. Lexi and Sara offered to ride with her, but she wouldn’t even sit on him.

DSC01978

I think Sam liked seeing the cows more than the horses, I think. She couldn’t believe she got to pet a cow. She told us the cow was softer than the horse but somehow we doubted that.

DSC01987

Because 3 pools weren’t enough, we also hit the “sprayground” which is this great place for kids full of fountains and whatnot to keep cool. Sam was a little hesitant about the bigger fountains, but she liked the little, gentle ones.

IMGP1744

We went to the Fort Worth Stockyards one day and that is always fun. I remember it from the last time I visited. Lots of horses go up and down the street and Sam liked that a lot. She petted a few and introduced her new stuffed horse to them all. Right before we got ready to go home, the whole group of them, maybe 5 or 6, went down the street together on their way to the cattle drive. Sam just about flipped out yelling to me, “Mommy! It’s a horsey parade!” It was so cute. Then a bunch of cars drove past and she thought that was a car parade. I didn’t disillusion her. It made her happy.

DSC01937

There were pony rides too but Sam wouldn’t even get on a pony. She said she would go if Daddy was there.

DSC01941

Now, these horses are more Sam’s speed. 🙂

DSC01943

DSC01945

I’m not sure who this is, actually, but Sam looked cute hanging out with him.

DSC01954

It was a fantastic visit. None of us were ready to go. Sam had so much fun seeing her “new” family. She had so much attention, and so much fun. It is so unlike home, where there are only a few of us. It makes me sad that everyone is so far away. When I see everyone, I realize how much I miss them. I love you all and Sam does too! And I realize how much Sam is missing out on. She would have so many people to visit, to play with her, to spend time with her, to babysit her…. Here’s one of her potential babysitters now!

DSC01957

My mom and I quickly determined that 10 years between visits to Texas is far too long. Hopefully, we will get back soon. But, Mark was at home, and we missed him terribly. So off we went! Home to Daddy!

Pittsburgh

| October 7, 2013

This past weekend we drove out to Pittsburgh for Elyse’s wedding.  It was going to be fun for us, for sure, but it was especially exciting for Sam since it was her first wedding! I tried to explain what a wedding was to her and all she had to hear was there are pretty dresses, flowers, music, dancing, and cake, and she was sold. It helped that she remembered Elyse and Tia from their visit. It made the whole thing more thrilling.

We were worried that the six hour drive would be hard for Sam to handle. We had done it with her once before for his Uncle Joe’s wedding, but she was so young then, it was easy to amuse her. Not to mention, she napped a lot. This time, the night before we left, Mark thought she might enjoy a scavenger hunt. So, early in the morning, I was on the computer frantically looking for clip art images to make a scavenger hunt list she could look at. Finding the images was easy, trying to choose things she is likely to see on the boring Pennsylvania Turnpike was not.  But I did a pretty good job, if I do say so myself. Mark’s idea was a pretty good one.  She kept amused the entire trip trying to find the things on her list. She barely did anything else. Every time she found an item, I would put a sticker next to it.  If she found it more than once, she got another sticker.

DSC_1669

Here is her list.  As you can see, she found a few other things on our trip that she thought were special enough to merit my drawing them on — a crane, a taxicab, a windmill, and a bulldozer.

DSC_1675

Then, we found even more things, so I had to resort to drawing on the back.  The spinning donut was just a funny sign on a donut shop that we saw once we got there and so was the “very funny thing” which is what Sam has always called those weird air filled things with flappy arms that you see in front of mattress stores, mostly.

DSC_1677

We had the whole day Saturday before the wedding to fill so we decided to take Sam to Rosalind’s Candy Castle, the candy store that has been owned by parts of Mark’s family for as long as he can remember. That store was always a huge part of his childhood. He remembers going there to see his Aunt Lou and Aunt Lib in the back making huge batches of candy and having Easter baskets full of Rosalind chocolate. So much is gone now that Mark remembers from Pittsburgh, but Rosalind is still there so it was imperative we go!

DSC01324

We didn’t tell Sam what kind of store we were going to before we got there. When we told her it was a candy store, I thought her head was going to pop!

DSC01317

We let her pick out about a million different things, but it was too hard to say no. After all, it’s not like we will be going back there any time soon. There was so many different types of chocolate lollipops!

DSC01310

That is one happy little girl!  The proverbial “kid in a candy store”, she ran wild!

DSC01314

Wedding time! What a beautiful setting. The entire thing – the ceremony and the reception — was lakefront. It was such a gorgeous day.

DSC01331

Mark, Sam and Tia 🙂

DSC01376

Sam loved the whole thing. She was so good for the ceremony only talking to me once or twice, and once just to say the bride looked beautiful, which she certainly did.

DSC01408

Sam’s favorite part by far, was the dancing. She boogied down the entire time!

DSC01398

DSC01406

After a while, Sam went onto the beach to collect all the flowers that had been dropped by the wedding party. She had such an armful by the time she was done, she looked like a bride herself.

DSC01409

It was a late night, and this is how Sam looked, sound asleep in the car, by the time we got back to the hotel. Surrounded by flowers, exhausted, in her pretty party dress. What a perfect shot to end the evening!

The Family

| August 11, 2013

One last crop of vacation photos, and I saved these for last. We always try to take family portraits while we are all away, and tan, and happy. Here is the result of our photo session (thanks, Mark!) How lucky we are to have each other, we are truly blessed.

The kids were so excited because this year, Mark let them work his wireless camera remote. Each time they pushed the button, the camera and two strobes would fire which they thought was very impressive and therefore had to do it over, and over, and over again :). They were good about taking turns though, here you can see Maddox has the remote so he actually took this photo, great job Maddox!

Last night of fun

| August 11, 2013

Our last night in Sea Isle, we stopped at the rides so that Sam and Maddox could do one last fun thing. Sam wanted to ride the carousel, of course, and not surprisingly, she picked the cat. I thought her head was going to explode when she saw it!

Maddox and Sam rode the boats together…

…we took some silly pictures…

…and had ice cream and funnel cake.

Our last stop was at the marina to see all the boats. What a gorgeous sunset!

It was a great way to end a marvelous vacation!

Our last few beach days

| August 11, 2013

Our last few beach days were spent much as the first – having fun as a family. Sam was so happy to be with everyone, all in one place. Although, she did wish her Poppy was there too (as I was told many, many times). Here are some pics of the fun in the sun.

Sam and her Aunt Krista

We spent time down near the water watching the clams dig their way back into the sand after the water rushed out. Sam made “clam houses” on the beach for them to live in. (You can see one next to her foot). She was very worried about the poor clams….

Down at the jetty, exploring some more.

Mark helped Sam build some “fairy castles”…

Sam had a good time sneaking up on her unsuspecting Dad waiting on the beach for her in the mornings. She sprayed him pretty good with her spray bottle!

I think this is a really nice picture of Krista and Maddox. He is so full of energy, it is hard to get him to stand still long enough for a photo!

Sam and her Mom Mom and Grandmom, enjoying the sun.

Flying kites…

What a great time at the beach! Sea Isle, we will miss you!
