Vacation, Here We Come! (Day 1 in Sea Isle!)

| July 19, 2015

I never thought vacation would come this year, but it finally did! Boy, did we all need a vacation. It was a wonderful trip all around. We all had a blast last week, and it seemed for once no one was stressed out, there was no fighting about even minor things, and our biggest complaint was that it was over too soon.

The first night, we took it easy and just wandered around in Sea Isle. As we do each year, we stopped at the boat to take a picture. A few minutes before we took this picture, we had stopped into a favorite store and Sam somehow managed to talk me into buying her the little stuffed dog she is holding, Tuffy. Boy, that kid really loves her stuffed animals!

DSC02226

We didn’t have much to do, and ice cream seemed in order, so we went to Yum Yums. Sam was ready to eat (and so was Tuffy, apparently…)

DSC02229

Sam loves that her Grandmom comes with her on vacation every year. She always asks me why Poppy doesn’t come…yeah, Poppy, why not?

DSC02236

Next stop, Turtle! I can’t believe how big Sam is getting. Her legs could barely get across him not that long ago.

DSC02237

On the way back down the Promenade, we stopped at the arcade so Sam could ride some rides and play some games. She made a beeline for this horse, which surprised me. She always liked the horses, but now that she is older, I thought she’d find them boring. Nope. Doesn’t look like it.

DSC02240

Sam and Mark had a race. Sam won!

DSC02242

Sam played lots of games (to get the tickets of course). It is funny that even at her age, she has her favorite things that she remembers from years past. Spider Stomping is one of those things. She was remarkably better this year than last year. She did just fine with no help from any of us.

DSC02244

Mark tried to show Sam some old school pinball. I think she didn’t quite get the allure. Ah, Sam, your parents are old!

DSC02247

Grandmom and Sam tried out basketball. They should have been good, they get to practice at Putt Putt at home.

DSC02249

I decided to try my hand a skeeball, my favorite arcade game by far. Sam wanted to help by handing me the balls, but unfortunately, she hands them faster to you than you can throw!

DSC02250

This fishing game was fun, and Sam won loads of tickets!

DSC02254

Sam really wanted to play air hockey with Mark. She is getting pretty good now, defending her side and getting some shots in. She loves it when she scores.

DSC02256

DSC02259

We stopped at the bay to see the sunset. It wasn’t the most impressive beach sunset ever, but it was a great way to end our first day.

Ocean City, NJ

| August 31, 2014

This year, we were lucky enough to be able to steal a few extra days at the beach. Since Krista and Adam spent a few days at our beach house, we were able to crash at theirs in Ocean City. We couldn’t wait! Well, all of us except Zephyr. She was trying to stow away in our luggage!

DSC01030

I left work as early as I could on Wednesday and we arrived at the shore around dinnertime. After a quick bite of Mack and Manco pizza (yeah, it’s Manco and Manco now, but whatever, it’ll always be Mack and Manco to us) we headed for a walk to the boardwalk.

DSC01032

It was too late to do a lot, but we thought the kiddos might enjoy the arcade, so that was our first stop. Mark and Sam had a game of air hockey and I was impressed. She was a decent opponent!

DSC01034

After leaving the arcade, we walked a bit more and Sam was ready to burst when she saw Anna and Elsa of Frozen fame!

DSC01035

Baby Ryder wasn’t too impressed, so Pop Pop hung out while we all had fun.

DSC01049-2

The next morning, it was time to hit the beach early. It was a beautiful day and we had the best time. Sam loved the odd tidal pool that formed. It ran for blocks and blocks parallel to the beach and was sort of like a lake in the sand. You can see the waves and the ocean on the left side of the photo, where the lifeguard’s boat is.  In this picture, the waves were coming up at high tide to meet the tidal pool, but on most of the beach there was a huge expanse of sand there.

DSC01039

You can see, she is having fun in her own little pool.

DSC01047

That night, we headed to the boardwalk for real. That is the one major benefit of staying in Ocean City – instant boardwalk access. The rides were the first order of business. We rode the train then Sam and Maddox got Krista and I on the balloon ride. With the two of them wildly spinning the seat, Krista and I were seasick!

DSC01074

Krista took the kids on the bears, but I stayed behind. As Krista so aptly put it, “Oh, great, more spinning.” 🙂

DSC01060-2

DSC01057

We had to ride the carousel because it is always one of Sam’s favorites.

DSC01062

Last day at the beach, and we were determined to get every bit of fun out of it. Sam had no problem having fun! We were back at the tidal pool and Sam made a cute castle with a bridge for her boat to sail up to. She worked so hard on all the details.

DSC01193

DSC01196

Strangely, Sam found a ladybug on the beach. It crawled right on her toe!

DSC01198

After Sam was done in the water, we plopped her into the lifeguard boat for a photo op. Picking up the oar was her idea and she looks great! Later, Maddox got in too.

A few family photos later…

DSC01185

…and it was time to bury Mark! The kids had a blast burying him from head to toe. Ok, well, neck to toe!

DSC01163

DSC01170-2

Last night, and one more chance at the boardwalk. We rode some rides, and then, what turned out to be Sam’s favorite thing of all, what she called, “The Spooky House”. It was very tame, but Sam thought it was wonderful. We went in twice and the second time, Mark told Sam to scare all the monsters. Each time one popped out, she’d yell BOO!

DSC01101

DSC01092

DSC01096

Did you think we would forget the Ferris Wheel? Not a chance. I don’t think I have ever gone to the boardwalk and not rode the Ferris Wheel. Mark and I are so glad Samantha loves it like we do.

DSC01122

DSC01123-2

DSC01138

It gets super cold up there, especially at night, and we left our jackets in the car. Mark happily obliged and kept Sam as toasty as he could.

DSC01143

Back to reality, back to work, back to home. It was fun, Summer, but we’re moving on to Fall. See you next year!

Vacation 2014, Day 7 – Perfect Day

| July 14, 2014

Our last day at the beach couldn’t have been better. The storms blew out and beautiful weather blew in. It was the kind of day that you want for every day at the beach. We started the day by digging Sam a giant hole (again). When Maddox came down he wanted to help her dig her hole but she was feeling a bit possessive so I helped him dig his own giant hole. Later, Maddox thought we should join the holes, so Mark and I, with a little help from the kids, dug a trench joining the holes. They spent so much time running back and forth, it was worth it.

DSC00547

DSC00548-2

I made Sam a small sand castle while I was relaxing in my chair and she immediately had to decorate it.

DSC00553

Grandmom took Sam for a spin (one of her favorite things). I don’t know how she doesn’t get dizzy! Or if she does, she enjoys it!

DSC00560

Sam had so much fun this day, and so did we all.

DSC00604

Time for a dip in the water and some wave jumping! It’s funny, when she was little, she used to want to jump the waves so she wouldn’t get wet, now she just does it for fun.

DSC00636

DSC00646

What a teenage expression – alright, alright, enough with the pictures!

DSC00626

More spinning!

IMGP1846

The kids had so much fun splashing around. I kept thinking that it isn’t fair that it was our last day – it was too perfect.

DSC00609

DSC00614

Sam wanted a “Sammy-Daddy project” so they decided to fly her owl kite. She is really good at holding on tight and keeping it in the air. She would move her arm back and forth so it looked like the owl was dancing.

DSC00594

Up, up and away!

DSC00567

DSC00573

Sam loves flying kites and doing this special thing with her dad is just what she wanted. If you look really closely near the tops of the photos, you can see her kite.

DSC00579-2

DSC00582

Sam let me in on their fun, but just for a minute.

DSC00591

Whew. Flying kites is hard work. It’s much easier this way!

DSC00596

Sam did let Maddox have a turn, but a short one!

DSC00588

DSC00584-2

Our beach time was coming to a close and my mom snapped this picture of Sam looking at her shadow. Shadows always seem to fascinate Sam. She likes to ask why they are sometimes big, sometimes small, and to make them move.

IMGP1852

Krista, Adam, Maddox, and Ryder were headed home that night, so we had a great take-out dinner from Basilico’s then we headed out for our last night at the Ocean City boardwalk. Sam was so tired from the beach that she fell sound asleep in the car. We plopped her in the stroller and started walking. We couldn’t wake her up for anything – well, almost anything. When Mark poked and prodded her a bit so she could see who was outside the Christmas store, she woke right up!

DSC00658

Ok, now she was awake and ready to go! It was later than we normally are at the boardwalk, and it was busy as could be. Sam had a blast seeing all the sights.

DSC00662

This gorilla was one of her favorite sights! She went right up to him to talk. Sam gave him a high five, then showed him her new Minny Mouse doll she just got at the Christmas shop. The gorilla hugged her Minny, which she thought was so cute. When we walked away, Sam asked me if next time we come we could bring him a banana. She thought if she brought him a banana, “I bet he’d give me a hug.”

DSC00663

Sam remembered French Fry guy from our vacation last year. She was very excited to see him again!

DSC00666

This salt water taffy man (who Sam kept calling Marshmallow Man) was a big hit. He got to see Minny Mouse too. There were so many silly characters on the boardwalk and she had to stop at them all. The funny singing skeleton at the golf course (who had her hysterical laughing and dancing to Who Let the Dogs Out), the talking crocodile and bird at the other golf course. You name it, she stopped to chat.

DSC00681

The sun was finally setting and the sky was nice for photos, so of course we stopped! The moon looked HUGE that night and I recall thinking maybe it just seemed that way because we were at the beach. Later, I saw on the news it was actually a “supermoon” which is when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit. So it was bigger!

DSC00671

DSC00678

DSC00692

After doing some shopping we made our last stop at the rides. Sam couldn’t wait to get on the train, which is the one thing we didn’t let her do last time we were at the boardwalk. All aboard!

DSC00699

DSC00703

She asked me if the train goes outside and I told her it did. She said she was thought so, but she was confused because she couldn’t see how the train got out of the inside, she couldn’t see the door. When the train went out, she was thrilled. The sky was dark, the whole amusement park was lit up and everything looked beautiful to her.

DSC00715

Seeing the Ferris wheel lit was a special treat.

DSC00710

At the entrance/exit for the train, these guys (for $1.00) move, sing, and play music. Sam remembered them from last year. She danced and danced her heart out to their music.

DSC00730

Sam really wanted to do the balloon ride again so I told Mark to go with her so he could see how much fun she had. They had a blast!

DSC00734

DSC00747-2

After the rides, it was time to go. We had a big day ahead of us the next day coming home, and it was after 10:00. Poor Sam fell asleep in the car.

DSC00749-2

Another great year at the beach. Another great vacation. It was full of family, fun, and relaxation. All that said, it was bittersweet for everyone because Sandi wasn’t there. I know we all missed her. She came up in conversation a lot, but always in a good way. Remembering how she loved the sunsets, the seafood, the ice cream on the beach. And mostly, how she loved the time with her family. We will hopefully always continue the tradition of heading to the beach together. It is good for Sam to be with her family, and good for all of us. I do cherish the time away, free of the cares and responsibilities of home, free to be the “fun mom” who is indulgent and lighthearted. I want to carry those feelings of contentment home with me, but it is hard to do. “Real life” gets in the way so fast when you walk in the front door.

Sam, you told me you weren’t ready to go, you were having too much fun. I was too, baby, I was too.

Vacation 2014, Day 6 – Rain, Rain, Go Away!

| July 14, 2014

Thursday the sky did not look friendly. It was our first day thus far on vacation that the beach was pretty much out of the question. The kids were good sports though. They spent some time in the morning playing with Maddox’s new Zingo game. It’s sort of like an easy Bingo, but boy, they had fun! They played it so many times!

DSC00496-2

When Zingo got dull, on to the iPad. Sam and Maddox play a lot of the same games so they are always trying to show each other how good they are and what they know how to do.

DSC00494

It was a lazy morning, but I think we all needed the rest!

DSC00497

Well, Mark didn’t get much rest….

DSC00492-2

A selfie, with Blue Frog!

DSC00493-2

We couldn’t spend the whole day at the house, so my mom and I took Sam to an arcade near the house. Sam played so many games. She won 771 tickets! This stack of over 250 she won all by herself, on one game, where you had to drop tokens down a chute at just the right moment to have them land in a truck. I was shocked actually at how well she did. As you can see, she is very pleased with herself! She told me the machine helped her stack her tickets (they just kept coming out of the machine and folding on the floor).

IMGP1798

We did go to the beach later when the rain let up, but it was cold. No rain, but cold! Sam ate ice cream anyway. Nothing is going to stop her from eating her fudgcicles!

DSC00501

I wrote her name in the sand and asked her to pose, to commemorate the week.

DSC00504-2

It was chilly, and we didn’t stay long. It’s no fun at the beach if you are going to stay wrapped in a towel the whole time.

DSC00511

Maddox didn’t mind a dip in the water, but I don’t think I was getting Sam near it that day.

DSC00499-2

After dinner, we tried to go back to the Ocean City boardwalk but it started raining again, and we heard thunder, so it was out of the question. We decided to salvage the night by heading to Yum Yum’s for ice cream. Since we were there, it was time for another turtle visit.

DSC00516-3

DSC00528

DSC00530

Sam was disappointed we didn’t go to the boardwalk, but there’s nothing like ice cream to cheer a little girl up!

DSC00514-2

We went home fairly early and Mark thought a good old game of spoons was in order. He taught Sam to play and Krista helped Maddox and pretty soon the kids were taking it very seriously. They are quite competitive, these two!

DSC00537

We called it a night and hoped for a better, sunnier day the next day. Good night everyone!

DSC00546-2

Vacation 2014, Day 5 – Let the Games Begin!

| July 14, 2014

Wednesday night we decided to go to the Promenade to let the kids play arcade games together. Sam and Maddox had fun climbing on Adam and grabbing for the iPad before we left.

DSC00488

As much as she wanted to go play games, the beach wore her out. She wanted a piggyback ride so her dad obliged!

DSC_4976

DSC_4975

As soon as we got to the arcade, Sam saw the crane games and she desperately wanted a toy. I am horrible at the money sucking games, but Mark has somehow gotten to be rather proficient so he gave it a go.

DSC_4908-3

You can see from the enormous hug Mark got that was successful. Blue frog in hand, off Sam went to play more games.

DSC_4909-2

Maddox loves the arcade too, but I guess what kid wouldn’t with the promise of prizes at the end?

DSC_4922

Basketball is one of Sam’s favorites and Maddox played too. He seemed to be doing very well!

DSC_4901

My favorite is always skeeball. I love that game. I swear, I could dump a mint in there. The longer I play, the better I get, so it’s worth it! Everyone got in on the fun. I think we had every lane!

DSC_4883

DSC_4895

Sam tries and tries, but can’t throw/roll the ball hard enough to get it to the end.

DSC_4945

We play this spider game every time we come to Sea Isle with her. This year, she did so much better than last year.

DSC_4839

Mark and his dad played a more grown up arcade game – air hockey. I’m not sure who won, but they were playing pretty fiercely!

DSC_4906

Now it’s Sam’s turn at basketball. She shoots…

DSC_4851

Nothing but net!

DSC_4858

Sam quickly found the game where you just spin the wheel, Price is Right style, and whatever it lands on, you get that many tickets. She got lucky and hit big quite a few times. She loved her big strip of tickets!

DSC_4942

Maddox cashed in his tickets and showed us all of his prizes.

DSC_4957-2

Sam had her bag of goodies too and before we left, she rode some of the little rides out front.

DSC_4964-2

Krista and her dad hung out outside for a while. I don’t think arcade games are really Ryder’s speed.

DSC_4950

On the Promenade, we saw this bench and Sam and her Pop Pop took a rest together.

DSC_4830

We made a stop at the turtle, where we always take some photos. Sam loves visiting the turtle and makes him talk in cute little voices. He missed her.

DSC_4744-2

It was truly a beautiful night to take photos with our beautiful girl.
